Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Namibia marked the conclusion of his five-nation tour and a significant moment: the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly thirty years. A ceremonial welcome was held, followed by a wreath-laying at the National War Memorial. Discussions with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah centered on bolstering cooperation in digital technology, defense, security, agriculture, healthcare, education, and critical minerals. They also discussed enhancing trade, energy, and petrochemical ties. PM Modi thanked Namibia for its support in Project Cheetah. Upon arrival, PM Modi was greeted by the Namibian Minister of International Relations and Trade, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, and members of the Indian diaspora, reflecting the warm reception. The visit is expected to deepen the relationship between the two nations, built on India’s early support for Namibia’s independence. Bilateral trade amounted to USD 814 million in 2023-24, with substantial Indian investment in Namibia, mainly in mining. The cheetah translocation is a prime example of the trust between the two countries. India and Namibia are looking to expand cooperation in various sectors, including mining, energy, health, agriculture, and infrastructure. Discussions for a Preferential Trade Arrangement with the Southern African Customs Union are also underway.
