Friday saw significant unrest in Lahore as Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) party launched a march towards Islamabad, leading to violent clashes and claims of multiple fatalities. According to TLP chief Saad Rizvi, Punjab police actions during the confrontation resulted in the deaths of at least 11 party workers and injured over two dozen, with allegations of denied medical treatment for the wounded. Official confirmations of these deaths are pending. The protest, characterized as a ‘Gaza March,’ commenced after Friday prayers, drawing thousands of TLP members carrying makeshift weapons and chanting slogans. Police attempted to intercept the procession using barricades and tear gas at various points across Lahore. Despite the security measures, protesters pushed forward, with some reportedly occupying parts of the Orange Line Metro and engaging in stone-throwing, which injured several police officers. Social media captured alleged instances of protesters using government vehicles, including cranes, to facilitate their movement. The clashes reportedly intensified near Azadi Chowk, causing damage to police vehicles and injuring officers. Lahore police confirmed numerous injuries to their personnel. The TLP continues to assert its version of events, highlighting worker casualties due to alleged police gunfire. Legal action followed, with 110 TLP activists remanded into custody for 12 days on charges of attacking police and damaging property, allegations disputed by the party. In response to the escalating situation, authorities implemented road closures leading to Islamabad and reportedly curtailed internet services to prevent further organization and spread of information.
