Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, defended the controversial ‘hybrid model’ of governance, where military and civilian leaders work closely together. This statement comes amidst international criticism of Pakistan’s democratic record and human rights issues. In an interview with Mehdi Hasan, Asif countered critiques of military involvement in Pakistani politics, instead pointing to the United States and its ‘deep state.’
When asked about the power dynamic in Pakistan, where the military and civilian leaders share power, Hasan noted that the Defence Minister appeared to answer to the head of the army. Asif responded, emphasizing his role as a political appointee. When asked about the U.S. model, he pointed to a ‘deep state’.
Asif described the Pakistani system as “hybrid,” and when pressed further on power-sharing, he stated that decisions are made through consensus. He acknowledged the system is not ideal, but a ‘practical necessity’ until Pakistan’s economic and governance issues are resolved.
