New Zealand’s First Wild Bird H5N1 Case Sparks Preparedness Push
A wild seabird retrieved from Petone Beach in Wellington on Wednesday tested positive for the H5 virus, marking the first detection of the strain in New Zealand’s avian wildlife. Senior veterinary officials emphasized that the virus could become a resident disease within a few months if it spreads unchecked. Mary Van Andel, chief veterinary officer, warned that controlling an outbreak once it permeates wildlife would be a daunting task. University of Auckland biologist Professor Diane Brighton explained that isolation alone cannot shield the nation from the virus, though there is currently no sign of large‑scale mortality among native birds. Human infection is possible but exceedingly rare and unrelated to food safety concerns. Otago University virologist Professor Jemma Gioghen highlighted that New Zealand has been on alert after similar outbreaks globally and called for intensified bird monitoring, rapid genome analysis, and strict oversight. In response, the Conservation Department has started vaccinating 300 breeding individuals from five of the country’s most endangered species, such as the kakapo and takahe. Massey University epidemiologist Naïjel French cautioned that a spread could threaten tiny, vulnerable populations, including the critically rare fairy tern, potentially leading to their disappearance.
