Pakistan’s military landscape has been redefined with the creation of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) position, now held by Field Marshal Asim Munir. This pivotal role integrates command of the Army, Navy, and Air Force under a single authority, along with oversight of the National Strategic Command, which governs the country’s nuclear arsenal.
The 27th Amendment to the Constitution underpins this new structure, notably eliminating the retirement age for the CDF. While the Chief of Army Staff previously retired at 64, the CDF appointment is for a five-year period, with the government empowered to grant further five-year extensions. This ensures potential for prolonged leadership and strategic stability.
Confirming the appointment, the President’s office stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recommendation for Munir to serve as CDF in addition to his role as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has been approved. This makes Munir Pakistan’s most powerful military figure, holding the five-star rank of Field Marshal and unified command responsibilities.
The creation of the CDF post signifies a deliberate move to centralize military command and replaces the abolished Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. The announcement comes after considerable speculation about the government’s strategic decisions regarding military leadership.
Additionally, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu has received a two-year service extension, effective March 19, 2026. The President extended his best wishes to both senior officers on their appointments and extensions.
