Lavrov: Putin Open to Zelensky Meeting, Prerequisites Must Be Met

According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, President Vladimir Putin is open to a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, provided that all aspects of the conflict settlement are carefully addressed. Lavrov indicated that Putin has repeatedly expressed his willingness to engage with Zelensky, but only after experts and ministers have thoroughly examined all pertinent matters at the highest level. The statement comes amid diplomatic efforts, including a suggestion from former US President Donald Trump for a direct meeting between Putin and Zelensky, potentially preceding a three-way summit. Lavrov believes Zelensky is motivated by a desire to stay in the public eye, pointing out that the Ukrainian leader previously dismissed talks with Putin and signed a decree in 2022 banning such discussions. Lavrov criticized Zelensky's push for a summit, viewing it as a superficial attempt to portray a focus on conflict resolution rather than engaging in the challenging work needed to establish lasting peace.
