Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has passed away at the age of 80 in Koothattukulam, Kerala, following a sudden heart attack during his morning walk. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the loss, remembering Odinga as a “cherished friend of India” and recalling their personal connection that began when Modi was Chief Minister of Gujarat. Odinga, who was in Kerala for Ayurvedic treatment, collapsed and was rushed to Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre, where he was pronounced deceased. His body is currently at Deva Matha Hospital in Koothattukulam. In a statement, PM Modi expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “He was a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.” Modi highlighted Odinga’s “special affection for India, our culture, values and ancient wisdom,” particularly his admiration for Ayurveda, which he witnessed positively impact his daughter’s health. This deepened his commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between India and Kenya. The Prime Minister extended his heartfelt condolences to Odinga’s family, friends, and the people of Kenya. Odinga had been in India for six days with family members, adhering to a daily regimen of walks and hospital treatments. The heart attack reportedly occurred around 6:30 a.m. during his walk, and he was brought to the hospital in severe condition. Odinga was a transformative leader in Kenyan politics for over 40 years, serving as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013. This era was crucial for national healing and constitutional reform. Celebrated for his charismatic presence and strong connection with the Kenyan people, he was instrumental in shaping the nation’s democratic trajectory. His role in the negotiated settlement of the 2007–08 post-election crisis was a testament to his commitment to dialogue and peace. Odinga, who led the Orange Democratic Movement for a considerable period, was a frequent presidential contender and a constant fixture in Kenya’s political arena. His career was defined by both tenacious political battles and a consistent drive for an inclusive democratic framework. Kenyan Embassy officials in New Delhi are coordinating with Kerala authorities for the repatriation of his remains. His passing has sent shockwaves through the local community and the Kenyan diaspora.
