Carrying forward the momentum generated by Prime Minister Modi’s recent engagement with EU leadership, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar arrived in Cyprus on Wednesday for the bloc’s informal foreign ministers’ retreat. The Gymnich meeting, taking place in the coastal city of Limassol, will allow Jaishankar to present India’s perspectives on the Ukraine conflict, maritime security, and emerging technologies. During a technical halt in Frankfurt, Ambassador Ajit Gupte updated Jaishankar on the latest developments in India-Germany relations, seeking ministerial guidance on expanding cooperation in defense manufacturing and sustainable energy. The Indian mission later shared images of the interaction on social media. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan and Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha are among the other non-EU invitees. A dinner hosted by Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos on Wednesday evening will give participants an opportunity to exchange views in an informal setting before the main deliberations begin on Thursday. With the India-EU free trade agreement talks entering a decisive phase, Jaishankar is expected to use the Cyprus platform to address regulatory bottlenecks and explore new frameworks for investment screening and intellectual property protection. Officials in New Delhi view the gathering as a chance to demonstrate that India is ready to shoulder greater responsibility in a rapidly changing global order.
