A 43-year-old man of Indian descent has been charged with federal tax evasion in Texas. The accused, Anil Surbhi, a U.S. permanent resident, was indicted by a federal jury this week. The indictment details accusations that Surbhi, who runs an IT company based in Georgia, improperly used company funds for personal investments and expenses. These amounts were reportedly not declared as income when filing tax returns. The U.S. legal system treats tax evasion as a serious federal offense. Individuals convicted of tax evasion could face a maximum prison sentence of five years and/or a fine of $250,000. Corporations convicted of the same offense could be fined up to $500,000.
