Protests involving thousands of people took place in Tel Aviv and other cities across Israel, centered around the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The demonstrators’ key demands were a ceasefire and a hostage release agreement with Hamas. The protesters expressed their belief that Prime Minister Netanyahu is not acting with sufficient urgency to secure the release of the hostages.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Thursday that he had authorized negotiations for the return of all 50 hostages. Alongside this, he proceeded with plans to authorize a military operation targeting Gaza City.
Liran Berman, whose brothers were among those taken hostage on October 7, 2023, was present at the demonstrations. He noted that while a deal is possible, Hamas has shown a tendency to quickly alter its position. He claimed that Netanyahu’s actions appear to contradict his statements regarding negotiations, possibly losing a crucial opportunity to save lives and return the hostages.
Hamas had previously indicated its agreement to a deal, under which a 60-day ceasefire would be implemented. During this period, 10 surviving and 18 deceased hostages would be returned to Israel, with Israel releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Discussions regarding the remaining hostages and ending the war would be held during the ceasefire.
Netanyahu has recently indicated his preference for a comprehensive agreement rather than a phased approach. He has stated that any agreement must satisfy his conditions, including Hamas disarming and the demilitarization of Gaza.
