Iran has accused the United States, along with Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, of misusing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for political gain.
The accusation was made by Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, in response to reports that these Western nations were seeking to pass an anti-Iran resolution at the IAEA’s Board of Governors meeting in Vienna.
Baqaei said that while Iran has taken measures in the past in coordination with the IAEA, the US and the three European nations have abused the agency for their political purposes. He also emphasized Iran’s continued commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and Comprehensive Safeguard Agreements.
Reports suggest that France, Britain, Germany, and the United States are pushing for a draft resolution against Iran for ‘non-compliance’ with safeguard obligations.
In a related development, it has been revealed that former US President Donald Trump sought the help of Russia in order to restart the stalled US-Iran nuclear talks. Yury Ushakov, an aide to President Vladimir Putin, said that the two leaders discussed the Iranian nuclear program, and Trump believed Russia’s assistance could be beneficial.
