The Indian government has stated that it did not order the withholding of the Reuters account on the social media platform X. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) confirmed that the Government of India did not request the restriction of the Reuters handle. The government is working with X to address the problem. Currently, users in India cannot access the Reuters account, which displays a message explaining that the account is withheld in response to a legal demand. The same restriction has been applied to the X handles of Turkiye’s TRT and China’s Global Times. X’s help center clarifies that this occurs when the platform is legally compelled to withhold content, often due to a court order or local regulations.
