The ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to a health crisis, with a dangerous virus causing paralytic illnesses spreading rapidly. The destruction of essential infrastructure has left the population vulnerable to diseases. Medical resources are extremely scarce, and the situation is particularly critical for children.
Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) cases are increasing. The WHO reports 32 cases among children under 15 years old as of July 31st, primarily due to non-polio enterovirus. The Al-Shifa Hospital, damaged by Israeli attacks, has seen 22 cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, with three child fatalities and 12 children left with permanent paralysis. Essential medicines and equipment, like intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and machines for plasma exchange, are unavailable because of the Israeli blockade.
