By Reuters: A foiled multimillion-dollar heist at Chile’s largest airport left two lifeless on Wednesday morning, highlighting considerations of rising crime within the Andean nation.
Footage broadly shared on social media reveals a shootout between robbers and officers from Chile’s DGAC aviation company beneath a LATAM Airlines airplane on the Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Santiago.
Authorities stated one robber and a DGAC airport safety official died through the tried theft.
At La Moneda presidential palace in Santiago, Deputy Interior Minister Manuel Monsalve instructed reporters about 10 robbers entered the airport early Wednesday in three automobiles after tying up a safety guard.
“There was an intense exchange of gunfire,” Monsalve stated, noting that safety officers “foiled a robbery by a highly organized, highly armed and probably very well-planned robbery.”
The airplane, which had arrived from Miami, was carrying $32.5 million to be transported domestically by safety supplier Brinks.
Raul Jorquera, basic director of the DGAC, instructed reporters that no passengers had been in danger through the encounter, and that the robbers had “high capacity firepower” to steal the cash.
Organized crime in Chile has spiked in recent times, together with elaborate practice heists and multimillion greenback robberies on the nation’s foremost seaport.
