At the recent BRICS Summit, leaders collectively condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which occurred on April 22nd in Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in 26 fatalities. The joint declaration, issued by leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia, reiterated a firm commitment to counter-terrorism in all its forms, including addressing the cross-border movement of terrorists, terrorism financing, and safe havens. The declaration emphasized that terrorism is ‘criminal and unjustifiable,’ irrespective of its motivation, and urged for ‘zero tolerance’ against it, while rejecting any form of ‘double standards’ in countering it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the importance of treating the condemnation of terrorism as a fundamental principle rather than a matter of political convenience. The summit further acknowledged the activities of the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group and its subgroups.
