Bolsonaro's House Arrest Sparks Political Tensions in Brazil, Amidst Trump's Interference

Jair Bolsonaro is under house arrest in Brazil, accused of orchestrating a coup following his loss in the 2022 presidential election. The Supreme Court's decision comes amidst increased tensions, particularly after Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Brazil and threatened economic repercussions if Bolsonaro was penalized. Bolsonaro is alleged to have conspired with allies to instigate a violent rebellion to remain in power. Trump has labeled the legal proceedings against Bolsonaro as a 'witch hunt,' while the US State Department has criticized the house arrest, suggesting it is a tool to suppress the opposition. Trump has even considered imposing sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes under the Magnitsky Act.
