The Bangladesh Election Commission has taken the step of locking Sheikh Hasina’s National Identity Card (NID), effectively preventing her from voting in the upcoming general elections. The commission made this announcement, indicating a significant change in her ability to participate in the electoral process.
Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed that Hasina’s NID has been locked. He further explained that this action restricts her from voting, particularly if she is located outside of Bangladesh.
The Election Commission has also blocked the NIDs of several of her family members and close associates. Those affected include her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and her daughter Saima Wazed Putul. They will also not be allowed to vote.
In addition to the aforementioned individuals, the children of Sheikh Rehana and the former security advisor to Sheikh Hasina, retired Major General Tariq Siddiqui, along with their families, have also been prohibited from voting. However, the Election Commission Secretary did not provide further explanation on this matter.
The National Identity Card (NID) is crucial for voting, particularly for citizens living overseas. The Election Commission stated that individuals who have left the country, regardless of the reason, can vote in the general elections if their NID cards are active and not blocked.
The situation arises from a turbulent period in Bangladesh. Following a violent student movement, Sheikh Hasina was forced to seek refuge in India, which led to her government’s collapse. After this, Muhammad Yunus became the chief advisor in the interim government, which led to legal actions against Hasina and other officials, alleging crimes against humanity, and the suspension of activities of the Awami League party.
