The Israeli government has authorized a plan to occupy the Gaza Strip, a decision that has garnered a non-interfering stance from the United States. The decision by the Israeli Security Cabinet was announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. Despite internal disagreements and reservations from the Israeli military, the US under Donald Trump has taken a hands-off approach. This marks a departure from previous attempts at mediation and concern over the humanitarian situation.
The plan involves occupying significant areas of central Gaza, including Gaza City, which will displace around one million Palestinian civilians. The Israeli army also plans to operate in regions where hostages may be located, potentially endangering them.
Reports suggest that a video released by Hamas, which depicted an Israeli hostage, played a role in Trump’s altered perspective. Netanyahu and his team contend that only military force can compel Hamas to accept acceptable terms. However, Israeli Chief of Staff General Eyal Zamir has warned of the risks, including the potential danger to hostages and Israel being compelled to assume direct military control over Gaza and manage the welfare of its population.
