The year 2025 presents a grim picture for young girls in Bangladesh, marked by a significant surge in sexual abuse cases. A report released from Dhaka reveals a 75% increase in reported cases of sexual assault against girls between January and July 2025, with a total of 306 cases documented. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina previously voiced concerns about the rise in sexual violence targeting young girls in Bangladesh.
The N O Salish Kendra report sheds light on the ages of the victims, raising concerns about law enforcement and the safety of minors. The report indicates that 49 cases involve girls aged 0-6, 94 cases involve girls aged 7-12, and 103 cases involve girls aged 13-18. The age of the victim was not disclosed in 60 cases.
The report further underscores the vulnerability of girls in various settings. Twenty-two cases were recorded in madrasas or educational institutions between January and July 2025. Furthermore, 49 cases occurred on the streets, with police reports suggesting that these often involved the girls being followed before the assault took place at an undisclosed location.
The report also highlights the lack of justice for the victims. In 55 cases, the initial reports were dismissed, which means these girls did not receive any justice.
Adding to the severity of the situation, disabled girls are also being targeted. In June 2025 alone, 7 cases of rape against disabled girls were documented, which the Human Rights Commission found to be a horrific act.
Official statistics from the Bangladesh Police indicate that approximately 5,600 cases of sexual abuse against young girls were registered between 2014 and 2024, averaging to 560 cases per year.
The data for 2025 suggests that the number of sexual abuse cases against young girls may reach record-breaking numbers by the end of the year.
