A major earthquake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, struck Afghanistan on August 31, 2025. The disaster has caused over 2,200 fatalities, and the number of deaths is expected to increase. Nearly 500,000 people have been affected, including a large population of children. Many of the victims had previously been deported from Pakistan and Iran. The UN indicates that 5,230 homes in 49 villages were completely destroyed, and 672 homes sustained partial damage. UN teams have been unable to reach 362 villages due to damaged roads, complicating damage assessment. Travel from Jalalabad to a point 100 km away took 6.5 hours due to restricted roads and landslides. Numerous aid trucks are struggling to access the affected regions. People are facing extremely challenging conditions, lacking food, clean water, and sanitation. The UN has highlighted the potential for a cholera outbreak. Women and children are the most vulnerable and require immediate access to clean water, warm clothing, and shelter, given the impending snowfall. The UN plans to appeal for an emergency fund to send essential supplies. The Taliban authorities are supporting the relief work, and women are also joining the relief teams.
