Near Field Communication (NFC) technology is set for a boost with the introduction of NFC Release 15. This update, developed by the NFC Forum, increases the maximum contactless range from 0.5 cm to 2 cm. This change increases the operating volume, offering a more convenient user experience across diverse applications. The new release includes technical refinements to quicken and secure connections, particularly those that involve devices of smaller form factors like smartwatches and mobile phones. The update is anticipated to enhance the overall user experience in public transport, wearables, the automotive industry, and smartphone applications such as tap-to-pay and device unlocking. Additionally, the upgrade aims to promote sustainability by supporting NFC Digital Product Passports, facilitating tracking and the lifecycle of a product.
