The popular Google URL Shortener service is being phased out, with a final shutdown date set for August 25, 2025. This means that after this date, all goo.gl links will become inactive and will return a 404 error. This error indicates that the requested webpage is not found on the server.
Google is discontinuing this service because of reduced traffic in recent years. The company disclosed that in June 2024, the majority of the links (99%) did not register any activity. As a replacement, Google has introduced Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL), which delivers smart URLs enabling users to access content in Android, iOS, and web-based applications.
