OpenAI is integrating an instant checkout system within ChatGPT, powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). This new feature, developed in partnership with Stripe, allows users to purchase items directly from sellers within the chat interface. It will be available to all ChatGPT users. Initially, the feature will support single-item purchases. Future plans include the introduction of multi-item carts, along with the addition of more direct sellers. The rollout will begin in the United States, with subsequent expansion to other regions.
Users who inquire about a product supporting instant checkout will be able to buy it directly by entering their shipping and payment details. Merchants will handle order management, payment processing, and fulfillment using their existing systems; ChatGPT will simply act as a conduit for information. The service is free for users; however, OpenAI will assess a nominal fee to the merchants. The ACP is an open standard for AI commerce, enabling AI agents, people, and businesses to collaborate on purchases. OpenAI believes the new feature is powerful and secure. The initial launch will be in the US market before expanding to other regions.
