The launch of the beta version of Adi Vaani represents a significant advancement in the preservation of India’s tribal languages. This AI-based translator, developed by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, marks a first for the country. The project, undertaken as part of the Tribal Pride Year, seeks to safeguard languages facing endangerment and enhance communication between tribal and non-tribal populations. Currently accessible via the Google Play Store, with iOS and web platforms forthcoming, Adi Vaani aims to bridge linguistic gaps. It’s built upon advanced technology and community involvement, supporting real-time translation, interactive language learning, and digital preservation of cultural assets. Adi Vaani is a collaborative project, with contributions from IIT Delhi, BITS Pilani, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Nawa Raipur, and tribal research institutions from various states. The beta version supports several languages including Santhali, Bhili, Mundari, and Gondi, with more to be added. The platform has the potential to enhance digital literacy, improve health communication, and facilitate access to government initiatives.
