Kerala: Two port officers arrested in reference to Tanur boat tragedy

MALAPPURAM: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Kerala police on Tuesday arrested two senior port officers in reference to the Tanur boat tragedy that claimed 22 lives together with 15 youngsters on May 7.

The SIT has arrested senior Port Conservator accountable for Beypore Port V V Prasad and the Chief Surveyor at Alappuzha Port Sebastian Joseph in reference to the accident.

“They both were arrested due to their lapses in duty which apparently led to the accident,” a senior police official advised PTI.

With this, a complete of 12 individuals have been arrested by the police in reference to the boat tragedy, police added.

“Three of the total arrested were taken into custody for harbouring the accused owner,” police stated, including that they’re out on bail now. The boat capsised close to an estuary near the Thoovaltheeram seashore at Tanur round 7.30 pm on May 7.

According to district officers, 15 of the deceased had been minors aged eight months to 17 years and there have been 37 individuals onboard the ill-fated boat.

The High Court had on May 9 termed as “shocking” and “haunting” the boat accident at Tanur space of Malappuram district and initiated a PIL by itself to search out out why the authorities allowed the vessel to function by allegedly flouting guidelines.

The Kerala authorities had introduced a judicial probe into the matter and determined to provide a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased.
