Steve Smith, a key player for Australia, is preparing for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa with a clear message: he feels in top form. After a break from cricket following Australia’s Champions Trophy semi-final loss, Smith is refreshed and ready to perform at his best at Lord’s. Smith chose to step away from ODIs and spend over two months away from the game, including a trip to New York, where he avoided even casual bat practice. Talking in London, Smith said he deliberately stopped himself from picking up a bat before the team’s practice sessions. He stated, “I didn’t touch a bat until our first hit here.” He also found his initial batting sessions to be highly successful, feeling like everything ‘clicked into place’. Beyond the break, Smith focused on his physical conditioning. He collaborated with a personal coach in New York to improve his strength and flexibility. “I feel as strong as I’ve been since maybe 2014,” Smith confirmed. “My hips are in great shape, I’m getting lower – that’ll help in the slips too. It’s probably the best I’ve felt physically in years.” While Smith opened the batting earlier in the season, he now settles into his preferred No. 4 spot. Smith has 4 centuries in 5 Test matches and will bat at his usual position in the middle order, playing a critical role alongside Cameron Green and Marnus Labuschagne. Australia is set to rely on his experience to retain the WTC title. Despite the challenge of facing South Africa’s strong bowling lineup at Lord’s, Smith is optimistic and confident about the upcoming match, driven by a clear and refreshed mental state.
