Shreyas Iyer’s recent IPL performance has significantly improved his chances of being considered for the Indian white-ball captaincy. Even though the Punjab Kings didn’t win the IPL, Iyer’s leadership was a standout feature of their campaign. His previous success as captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders was proof of his capabilities. Now with a new team, Iyer has once again demonstrated his all-round skills.
“Right now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” as per the source.
During the 2025 IPL season, Iyer was the team’s second-highest run-scorer. He accumulated 604 runs in 17 matches, maintaining a high average of over 50 per innings with a strike rate of 174.69. His top score of 97 runs came against Gujarat Titans. Iyer has a strong captaincy track record, with his teams winning a significant number of T20 and List A matches. He is also the only captain to lead a team to 3 finals in the White ball format.
