Although Shreyas Iyer may not be part of India’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 squad, his career appears to be heading toward a significant role. Reports indicate that the stylish right-handed batsman is being considered as the next ODI captain once Rohit Sharma retires.
Iyer has built an impressive ODI record over the last four years. From 2021 to 2025, he averaged over 45, notched 14 half-centuries, and performed in crucial matches, including important contributions in India’s 2023 ODI World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy campaigns.
He has also resolved India’s longstanding issue at the No. 4 position, a spot that troubled the team. His ability to anchor innings and accelerate when required makes him one of the most dependable batters in the format.
Iyer also brings valuable captaincy experience. He led Delhi Capitals to their first IPL final in 2020 and won the trophy with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. He also led Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. Former players have often praised his calm presence, his ability to guide young players, and his smart tactical decisions.
Rohit Sharma has not yet spoken about his ODI retirement, but with the 2027 World Cup cycle approaching, the selectors seem to be planning a smooth transition. If everything goes as planned, Iyer could be the face of India’s next chapter in ODI cricket.
