During a seminar on the topic ‘Grassroots to Glory-All About Hockey’, held at the Rajgir Sports Academy, Dr. Tayyab Ikram, the President of the International Hockey Federation, made a significant announcement. The event was coordinated by the Sports Department and the Bihar State Sports Authority. Dr. Ikram revealed that the Rajgir Sports Academy would be granted recognition by the Asian Hockey Federation, with the backing of the International Hockey Federation. The seminar was designed to address the progress of hockey in Bihar and the nation, with experts leading discussions on several essential areas. Key subjects included the growth of women’s hockey, integrating sports science and technology into the sport, the value of training and coaches, the formation of a solid base at the grassroots level, and the role of state and central governments in the revival of hockey.
The seminar, led by Ravindran Shankaran, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Bihar State Sports Authority, also addressed the question of why India often employs coaches from Europe. Dr. Tayyab acknowledged that there is ample talent within Asian coaches but that they need identification and suitable financial support and infrastructure.
The seminar also featured mention of the ‘Mashaal’ competition, which is a sports talent search initiative occurring in Bihar. Dr. Tayyab emphasized that a shift in thinking, behavior, and sports philosophy at all levels, from the top down, is critical for developing true talent. The state government’s dedication to fostering sports and athlete development was acknowledged, highlighting the positive outcomes of its sports policies. This includes government jobs, rewards, and financial aid for athletes who earn medals. Furthermore, young players are supported through the ‘Prerna Yojana’, offering up to Rs. 3 lakh for equipment, nutrition, and training. During the Hero Asia Cup 2025 in Rajgir, local children served as ball boys and ball girls, showcasing the potential of the next generation.
Pritam Rani, an ex-Indian women’s team player, underscored the necessity of working at the grassroots level. Hockey India’s Secretary-General, Bhola Nath Singh, noted that this kind of gathering is a first for any international tournament. He advised players to make the most of their talent with hard work and true determination.
The Hero Asia Cup 2025, taking place at the Rajgir Sports Complex from August 29 to September 7, is a historic event for Bihar. The seminar was organized on a Friday, a non-match day, to facilitate discussions.
