Gukesh battled from a weaker position. But a blunder at the last moment cost him the game. With only two seconds remaining, Gukesh conceded defeat, visibly upset.
Carlsen, after struggling against Arjun Erigaisi, secured a draw, which was sufficient for him to win with 16 points. Carlsen’s consistency and Gukesh’s loss guaranteed the win.
Caruana’s win moved him to second place. Gukesh finished in third place. Arjun Erigaisi secured fifth place.
