Karun Nair’s performance in England has raised questions about his future in Test cricket. While several teammates excelled, Nair’s performance was marked by a single half-century in the series. Following the series, Nair’s reflections on Test cricket prompted well wishes about retirement on social media. However, he has not made any retirement announcement.
In his Instagram post, Nair expressed the demanding nature of Test cricket. He wrote, “Where every run is a labor and every wicket is a reward. It challenges your mind, body, and soul – day in and day out. In the last few months, we gave it our all and this team showed what purposeful struggle means? No shortcuts, just the right effort and pride in the badge and a great finish. What a journey!” A fan’s comment wishing him a “Happy Retirement” has led to widespread speculation, but Nair has not commented on the matter. In the England Test series, Nair managed only 205 runs in 8 innings with an average of approximately 25. Reports suggest he might be excluded from the Duleep Trophy due to a finger injury during the last Test, which may result in a fracture. He was expected to play for the Central Zone team. The Duleep Trophy 2025 is scheduled to begin on August 28.
Given his recent performance in England, a comeback to Test cricket looks uncertain. Shreyas Iyer is a potential replacement. Reports indicate Iyer’s readiness to return to Test cricket.
