The upcoming Test series between India and England has a significant alteration: the Pataudi Trophy has been renamed to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. This decision has garnered reactions from the cricketing world, including Kapil Dev, the captain who led India to World Cup glory in 1983.
Speaking at an event in Tunbridge Wells, where he was celebrating a significant moment from the 1983 World Cup, Kapil Dev commented on the renaming. He expressed, “I was surprised to hear the change of name from Pataudi to Sachin-Anderson. Such things don’t usually happen…” and followed with, “It feels a bit strange. Does something like this really happen? But it’s fine everything goes on in cricket. After all, it doesn’t really matter. Cricket is cricket, and it should remain the same on the field.” The Pataudi Trophy was established in 2007 to commemorate Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s contribution to the sport. The new name recognizes James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar. The legacy of the Pataudi name will be upheld through the Pataudi Medal, presented to the winning captain.
