The Rajya Sabha has approved the National Sports Governance Bill and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025, following their passage in the Lok Sabha. The National Sports Governance Bill, introduced by the Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister, sets out to provide a strong legal framework for sports governance in India, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and athlete welfare. The bill will provide a framework for sports promotion, athlete welfare, and ethical conduct adhering to international standards. It also seeks to create a unified, equitable, and effective way to resolve sports grievances and disputes. This legislative action is aimed at enhancing the Indian sporting environment by establishing a robust legal basis for governance. It aims to end inconsistent policies and court rulings that have been obstacles in the past. The Supreme Court and Delhi High Court had previously called for the creation of a comprehensive sports governance framework. The goal is to improve the functioning of sports federations, as India seeks to host the 2036 Olympics. The legislation addresses issues like conflicting orders and issues in sports federations. It aims to bring the country in line with other nations that have effective sports laws. The ultimate goal is to create a stable and transparent governance system focused on athletes. The bill introduces a National Sports Board, a National Sports Tribunal, and a National Sports Election Panel to strengthen governance and transparency. Also, it introduces the participation of athletes in the policymaking of the sport.
