Australia is preparing to begin its white-ball tour of South Africa, and star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is on the cusp of achieving a unique milestone in T20I cricket. With only four wickets needed to reach 50 T20I wickets, Maxwell is poised to join a select group of players who have scored over 2,500 runs and taken at least 50 wickets in T20Is.
A place in T20I history is within reach. If Maxwell achieves this feat, he will become just the fourth player in the history of T20Is to record the rare double of 2,500+ runs and 50+ wickets. The current members of this elite group are:
Player, Country, Runs, Wickets, Matches
Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh, 2,551, 149, 129
Mohammad Hafeez, Pakistan, 2,514, 61, 119
Virandeep Singh, Malaysia, 3,013, 97, 102
Maxwell already holds the distinction of being Australia’s third-highest run-scorer in T20Is, having accumulated 2,754 runs in 121 matches (111 innings) with an average of 29.29 and a remarkable strike rate of 156.03. His T20I career includes five centuries and 11 half-centuries, with a top score of 145 not out.
He has also been a valuable contributor with the ball, taking 46 wickets at an average of 30.08, with his best figures being 3/10. Should he take four more wickets, he will solidify his place in the T20I record books.
In the 2025 season, Maxwell has featured in five T20Is, scoring 90 runs at an average of 18.00, while maintaining an exceptional strike rate of over 195. His highest score this year is 47. With the ball, he has averaged 21.00, with his best figures being 2/15.
The Australian white-ball tour of South Africa will begin on August 10, featuring three T20Is followed by three ODIs. Fans will be eagerly watching Glenn Maxwell, anticipating his explosive hitting and the possibility of witnessing him achieve this historical milestone, a testament to his all-round excellence in the T20 format.
