Virender Sehwag, a former Indian cricketer famous for his aggressive batting, is now a prominent commentator. His son, Aryaveer Sehwag, is currently participating in the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2025, representing Central Delhi Kings. In a recent interview, Aryaveer shared a significant conversation he had with his father, highlighting his growing appreciation for his father’s cricketing achievements. He recalled that when his father was playing international cricket, he and others didn’t fully understand the depth of his talent. Virender Sehwag would often say, ‘You all think I’m just average; you’ll understand when you step onto the field.’ Aryaveer discussed the realization that came with his own experience in professional cricket.
In the interview, Aryaveer said, ‘My father would often say, ‘You think I’m just average; you’ll only understand when you play professional cricket.’ Now I realize how great my father was.’ He explained that playing professional cricket for a couple of years changed his perspective on his father’s skills. Aryaveer also shared details about his childhood, including playing cricket with plastic bats and balls alongside his brother. He added that their father always encouraged them to play well.
He also described an early memory related to the Indian Premier League (IPL). Aryaveer stated that he and his family used to attend the IPL matches held in Delhi. He mentioned that during the early IPL seasons, Virender Sehwag played for the Delhi Daredevils. Aryaveer also shared the disappointment when, on arriving at the Arun Jaitley Stadium (Kotla Stadium), his father was already out. Aryaveer Sehwag is a top-order batsman, similar to his father, and known for his fast-scoring approach, although he has not yet played in the DPL 2025.
This season, Central Delhi Kings acquired 17-year-old Aryaveer Sehwag for ₹8 lakh. Although he is yet to play a match, there’s much anticipation surrounding his power hitting capabilities.
