Aston Martin Formula One staff on Monday, August 1 introduced that 2-time champion Fernando Alonso will race for them from the 2023 season after the 41-year-old signed a multi-year contract. It’s a shock transfer for Alonso, who will be a part of Aston Martin as Sebastian Vettel’s substitute after the latter introduced retirement final month.

Alonso joins Aston Martin from Renault-owned Alpine. 4-time champion Vettel had earlier introduced he would dangle up his boots on the finish of the continued season.

Notably, Vettel had picked Mick Schumacher as his substitute at Aston Martin though the choice was to be made by the staff house owners.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Oscar Piastri, Formula Two champion from final yr, is all set to take the seat vacated by Alonso at Alpine. Piastri has been the reserve driver and he’ll make the transition subsequent season.

“I still have the hunger and ambition to fight to be at the front, and I want to be part of an organisation that is committed to learn, develop and succeed,” Alonso mentioned in an Aston Martin assertion.

“The passion and desire to perform that I have witnessed convince me to maintain my enjoyment and commitment to the sport. I intend to win again in this sport and therefore I have to take the opportunities that feel right to me.”

Alpine are fourth within the 10-team championship whereas Silverstone-based Aston Martin is ninth within the F1 2022 season.
