England drops Bethel, promotes Cox as top‑order for Pakistan series
Jacob Bethel has been omitted from England’s Test squad for the Pakistan tour after aggravating a knee injury sustained in the recent limited‑overs games against India. With Bethel unavailable, the selectors have handed Jordan Cox a place in the top‑order, giving the 23‑year‑old a chance to open the innings.
Dan Lawrence, who impressed in the County Championship with a prolific run‑scoring run, returns as an extra batting option at number six and also offers off‑spin when required. His all‑round abilities are expected to ease the gap left by Ben Stokes’s retirement from international cricket.
Alongside Cox and Lawrence, the squad includes captain Jo Root, fast bowlers Brydon Carse and Olly Robinson, and veteran pacer Sam Kuk. The team will be guided by interim head coach Marcus Trescothick, while Stephen Fleming prepares to take over full responsibilities after the series.
