A Barcelona court has sentenced a fan to one year in prison and fined them over one lakh rupees for racially abusing Athletic Bilbao’s Iñaki Williams. The abuse occurred in January 2020 at the RCD Espanyol stadium. Williams, who is of Ghanaian origin, was subjected to racist comments. Under Spanish law, the fan is unlikely to serve the prison sentence due to its length being under two years and their clean criminal record. The guilty fan is also banned from the RCD Espanyol stadium for three years. La Liga has welcomed the court’s decision, stating it will serve as a lesson to those making racist remarks.
