A former Australian captain, Greg Chappell, has openly criticized the selectors’ approach to building the team for the crucial first Ashes Test. The move to have Marnus Labuschagne potentially open the batting, without Sam Konstas in the lineup and with uncapped Jake Weatherald as an option, has been labeled as excessively risky.
Chappell’s analysis, published on ESPNcricinfo, suggests that the selectors are opting for a perceived ideal team structure that includes Cameron Green and Beau Webster, necessitating Labuschagne’s deployment as an opener. This decision is particularly influenced by Cameron Green’s recent recovery from back surgery and his reduced bowling load. “This will allow Cameron Green and Beau Webster to play, giving the best balance of batting and bowling in the squad,” Chappell quoted, highlighting the perceived rationale.
However, Chappell firmly believes Labuschagne’s optimal batting position is at No. 3, where his record is outstanding. “Opening with Labuschagne is extremely risky. He should bat at three, as that is his specialist spot, where he has delivered prolifically,” he insisted. He views the consideration of Labuschagne at the top as evidence of a deficit in trusted specialist openers and potential doubts about the bowling readiness of Green and Webster for Test match demands.
Chappell cited the illustrious careers of Ian Chappell and Ricky Ponting, who were highly successful No. 3 batsmen for Australia. He stressed that while they often batted early, the specific mental fortitude and approach required to open an innings are distinct and cannot be assumed.
Discussing Labuschagne’s recent form, Chappell acknowledged his improved attacking intent this summer. He raised a concern about a ‘risk-averse’ batting philosophy, arguing that it can actually hinder performance and increase the chances of dismissal. “In this state of mind, the feet do not move, and the runs dry up,” Chappell elaborated, warning that batting Labuschagne out of his established role could undermine his current strong batting performances.
