The inaugural match of the three-match ODI series between Australia and South Africa is scheduled for Tuesday, August 19, at Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns. The teams arrive after a close T20I series that saw Australia triumph 2-1, sealing the win in the final over. The 50-over format introduces new elements, particularly for Australia, which is dealing with various setbacks.
Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns was the venue for the recent T20I series conclusion and has limited experience hosting ODIs. The stadium last held a three-match ODI series in 2022 when New Zealand played against Australia.
Historically, batting has been challenging at this ground. Of the five ODIs played here, the highest team score is 267, and the highest successful chase is only 233. The pitch tends to offer early swing to seam bowlers, making scoring difficult, especially in the early overs.
Given the pitch’s nature and prior match outcomes at Cairns, it seems most advantageous to win the toss and bat first. Teams often struggle chasing under lights, with inconsistent bounce and reduced grip for spinners later in the innings.
Both team captains will be mindful of these conditions, and establishing a good score early could be critical to winning.
Australia enters the ODI series against South Africa in a period of change, contending with retirements and injuries that have affected the team’s strength. Recent retirements of seasoned players like Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis have left a leadership and experience vacuum. Injuries to Matt Short, Lance Morris, and Mitchell Owen’s concussion during the second T20I have added to their challenges.
With Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc also sidelined, Mitchell Marsh will captain the Australian team. Conversely, South Africa brings its full-strength squad, aiming to leverage its stability and depth. Captain Temba Bavuma returns to lead the team, with David Miller as the only significant absentee due to his commitment to The Hundred. The Proteas have a formidable batting unit featuring Aiden Markram, Dewald Brevis, and Ryan Rickelton. Kagiso Rabada heads the pace attack, with support from all-rounders Wiaan Mulder and Corbin Bosch, creating a well-balanced and strong unit for the visitors.
