Realme had a stupendous 2019 during which it emerged as one of the fastest-growing brands in India. The Chine phone maker set a new record for itself in the country by selling millions of smartphones across various budget segments in the Indian market.
But now the phone maker has announced that it will be taking a step in a direction that many of its fans may not appreciate. Realme has announced that it will introduce ads (content recommendations) with the latest software update of ColorOS at the start of 2020.
The company has informed that this system of content recommendation will promote apps and commercial links in the base operating system via the device’s Phone Manager app and Security Check page after installing new apps.
Although major brands like Samsung and Xiaomi have chosen to introduce ads in phones in a similar manner. However, Realme’s decision to follow suit is quite surprising considering that the company in the past has taken digs at Xioami and sister brand, Redmi, for the same.
The decision to offer ads in Realme smartphones was announced via a post in its official forums, where the company announced that smartphones with ColorOS 6 and above will offer ads going forward.
To continue offering more surprises for you and (to) maintain a healthy and sustainable business model, we have introduced commercial content recommendation in the OS, read an excerpt of the post.
While the company has confirmed that ads will appear in the Phone Manager and on the Security Check page after installing new apps, it has also clarified that users who don’t wish to be exposed to them can disable this ad service.
As such, if you’re one of the users looking to remove ads from your phone, Tap Settings, and then additional settings and from there scroll to get recommendations. Once there, disable the get recommendations toggle.
For now this appears to be the only way to ensure that your phone stays ad-free, with Realme increasingly looking to go Xiaomi’s way by bringing content recommendations and ads to its ColorOS platform and its phones.
