Uttar Pradesh has shown a remarkable improvement in urban sanitation and cleanliness, according to the Swachh Survekshan 2024-2025 rankings. This progress is evident in key areas like Water+ certification, ODF++ coverage, and the growth in Garbage Free Cities (GFCs).
The number of cities with Water+ certification has increased significantly, rising from two in 2023 to 16 in 2024. Furthermore, the number of ODF++ certified cities has seen a substantial increase, from 129 in 2023 to 337 in 2024, demonstrating the state’s enhanced waste management practices.
Uttar Pradesh has also made gains in GFC ratings, with Lucknow achieving 7-star status and six other cities earning 5-star ratings. The total number of GFCs rose to 83, an increase of 18 from the previous year.
Major cities like Lucknow, Agra, and Ghaziabad have performed well in the million-plus category. Smaller cities like Gorakhpur and Bijnor also achieved commendable rankings in their respective population categories. The Finance Minister of Uttar Pradesh acknowledged the positive results, highlighting the significant improvement of Lucknow in the rankings.
