The Supreme Court has taken decisive action regarding the Karur stampede tragedy, ordering a CBI investigation and establishing a specialized three-member committee to monitor the process. The stampede, which led to 41 deaths and many injuries, prompted the court’s intervention following a plea from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Justice Ajay Rastogi will lead the monitoring committee, which includes two IPS officers from Tamil Nadu who are not from the state. The court recognized the profound impact on citizens’ rights and aims to ensure a fair probe. As per the directive, the CBI must submit monthly investigation reports to the committee. The Supreme Court also addressed concerns about the handling of the case by the Madras High Court, seeking clarity on its previous rulings.
