The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation meeting was the scene of significant upheaval, with clashes between councillors and the subsequent removal of members by marshals. The opposition, consisting of Congress and AAP members, openly opposed the BJP Mayor. Their primary contention revolved around the alleged arbitrary conduct of the Mayor. The Mayor countered the criticism by stating the need to remove those councillors who tore and threw the minutes of the meeting.
The AAP and Congress councillors accused the Mayor of manipulating the minutes of the previous meeting. They claimed that their members were unfairly ejected from the meeting. The House remained in turmoil for approximately one hour. The confrontation escalated when Congress councillors tore up copies of the previous meeting’s minutes and threw them at the Mayor. The Mayor, Harpreet Kaur Babla, ordered the removal of the councillors involved in the disruptions and the tearing of the minutes. In addition to the Mayor’s actions, Senior Deputy Mayor Jasvir Singh Banti, Deputy Mayor Tarun Mehta, and councillor Premlata were also ordered to be removed from the House for tearing the minutes. The chaos that ensued led to the intervention of marshals and a temporary suspension of the proceedings for ten minutes.
