An investigation has been launched at a government hospital in Indore after two newborns were allegedly bitten by rats within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The infants, born last week, were under care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharaja Yashwantrao Chikitsalaya (MYH), a key medical facility in the state.
The discovery of injury marks on the newborns prompted the hospital staff to alert the administration. CCTV footage revealed the presence of rats in the NICU, with the incidents occurring on Monday and Tuesday. Dr. Ashok Yadav, the hospital superintendent, confirmed that one newborn had been bitten on the fingers, and another on the head and shoulder. Both infants were born with existing health problems; one of them was found abandoned in the Khargone district. The hospital reported that both newborns are currently in stable condition.
Hospital authorities have been instructed to implement measures to address the situation, including installing strong grills to prevent rat entry. Family members of patients have also been advised not to bring food inside the ward to minimize the risk of future incidents.
