On Monday, a memorandum calling for the removal of High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma was delivered to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla by Members of Parliament. This move is in response to the ongoing investigation related to the discovery of cash. A total of 145 Lok Sabha members have signed the impeachment motion, invoking Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution. The memorandum has received backing from MPs representing a variety of parties, including Congress, TDP, JDU, JDS, Jan Sena Party, AGP, SS (Shinde), LJSP, SKP, and CPM. Among the signatories are notable MPs such as Anurag Singh Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, PP Chaudhary, Supriya Sule, and KC Venugopal. The situation arose after the reported discovery of damaged currency notes at Justice Varma’s official residence in March 2025. The matter will now be investigated by Parliament. A judicial committee appointed by the then Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna had recommended Justice Varma’s removal, leading to Justice Varma appealing in the Supreme Court.
