Ranchi: The Sarla Birla Public School campus was abuzz with intellectual activity on Saturday as it hosted the commencement of Jharkhand Model United Nations 2025. This significant two-day event gathered 55 schools from across the state, creating a dynamic forum to foster diplomacy, leadership, and global consciousness. The summit officially began with the customary lamp-lighting ceremony.
Delegates were introduced to the event’s structure through an orientation session that covered parliamentary procedures, committee setups, and debate rules. This was followed by team-building exercises, group dialogues, and interactive workshops designed to build rapport and self-confidence. The main sessions saw students actively participating in debates, caucuses, and resolution drafting, representing different countries and dissecting critical global and national agenda items.
Several simulated committees addressed a broad spectrum of pressing issues. The World Trade Organization (WTO) committee reviewed the rise of global trade wars and their impact on the international trade system. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) discussed the legality of unilateral military interventions conducted in the name of humanitarian aid. The Lok Sabha simulation analyzed the implications of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA) on civil liberties, adherence to the rule of law, and the stability of regions such as Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast.
In parallel, the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly committee focused on measures to combat illegal mining, referencing the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 (MMDR Act, 1957), and applicable state laws. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), notwithstanding objections from Palestine, Sudan, and the USA, aimed to strengthen international justice and improve the enforcement mechanisms of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The All India Press and Publication Media (AIPPM) committee examined the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill 2023 and its potential effects on freedom of expression in modern Indian media. The International Press Corps (IPC) committee focused on rules governing photography, journalism, and caricature art. The Indian Premier League (IPL) committee engaged in a debate regarding the IPC Mega Auctions 26.
