The Forest Department in Jharkhand has successfully intercepted a wildlife trafficking operation, leading to the arrest of four individuals and the recovery of four pangolins valued at approximately ₹70 lakhs. The arrests were made in a village in the Gudabanda area of East Singhbhum. The suspects were found to be involved in the smuggling of pangolins, a protected species. The seized pangolins each weighed around 20 kilograms.
The individuals arrested were identified as Sadhu Kalundia, Khela Murmu, Piru Bandra, and Guru Das. Kalundia was found to be providing shelter for the pangolins in exchange for a daily fee of ₹500. The investigation revealed the existence of a larger trafficking network operating in the region, preying on rare wildlife. The Forest Department has initiated further investigations to identify and apprehend all individuals involved. Pangolins are highly sought after in the international market for their scales and meat, which are believed to have medicinal properties. Even tigers are unable to harm them.
The arrested individuals face charges under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
