The Jagannathpur Temple in Ranchi, a historical landmark dating back to 1691, is a testament to the region’s architectural and religious heritage. Constructed by Raja Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, the temple is a replica of the renowned Jagannath Temple in Puri. The temple is situated on a hill surrounded by lush greenery and water bodies. The annual Rath Yatra is a major cultural and religious event where Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings, is carried on a magnificent chariot to the Mausi Badi.
During the Rath Yatra, the deities stay at the Mausi Badi for ten days, offering darshan to the devotees. The Rath Yatra is accompanied by a ten-day fair held on a large area, attracting visitors from across Jharkhand and neighboring states. The contract for this year’s Rath Mela was secured with a substantial bid, highlighting its significance.
The Rath Yatra will be held from June 27 to July 6, 2025. A grand chariot, specifically designed for the procession, is a major attraction. Prior to the Yatra, the deities undergo a special bath, after which they are believed to fall ill and go into seclusion for treatment. The Netradan ceremony will be held before the Rath Yatra, on June 26. The Yatra concludes with the Ghurti Rath Yatra, when the deities return to the main temple. The Rath Mela is a time for both religious ceremonies and celebrating new beginnings, including marriages and the first feeding of solid food to infants. It is considered auspicious for newly married couples to attend the Rath Yatra and offer prayers for a successful married life.
