BMS backs wage and social security codes, challenges industrial relations draft

During a three‑day session in Ranchi, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh’s All‑India Working Committee examined the newly enacted quartet of labour codes. The body expressed explicit endorsement for the Wage Code‑2019, noting its potential to standardise minimum wages and ensure timely payment across sectors. Likewise, the Social Security Code‑2020 received commendation for expanding coverage of pension and health benefits to informal workers.

However, the federation voiced strong reservations about the Industrial Relations Code‑2020. Thirteen objections were listed, targeting the narrowed definition of "industry", the re‑characterisation of "wage", and the limited scope granted to negotiating unions. BMS argued that these changes could dilute the bargaining power of trade unions and erode established mechanisms for dispute resolution.

The meeting, presided over by National President S. Mallesh with General Secretary Surendra Kumar Pandey acting as secretary, also touched on the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code. While acknowledging its intent, BMS warned that certain provisions could compromise worker safety standards if not refined.

BMS reiterated its demand for corrective amendments, emphasizing that the ultimate goal is to protect workers’ rights while allowing the government’s consolidation of 29 central labour statutes to succeed responsibly.
